Sweet Crust: Baking Made Easy
Sweet crust or pie crust is solid baked base which is used as a base for multiple dishes. After the crust is baked, various fillings can be applied on top, for example, fruits salad, cream, lemon tart, etc. It is one os the most basic dishes that one needs to learn in baking.
Skill Level: Easy
Serving: 2 pie crust (Top and Bottom for 1)
Ingredients:
Flour (All purpose flour): 150g
Butter (Nutralite used by me): 100g
Icing sugar: 50g
Vanilla essence: 2 Drop
Egg: 1 Tbsp
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven at 170 degree Celcius
- In a large bowl whisk sugar and butter until you get creamy texture.
- Now add add egg and vanilla essence to it.
- Fold in the flour (maida) using a spatula and form a dough using hands.
- Now we have to lay out the dough on a flat surface. Lightly dust the surface with flour so that dough does not stick to surface.
- Roll out the dough using a rolling pin. Use gentle force while rolling it.
- As you roll out the dough, check if the dough is sticking to the surface below. If necessary add few sprinkles of flour under the dough to keep the dough from sticking.
- Achieve a nice good thickness of about 1/4inch.
- Now roll it out to fit your tin or pie dish. Gently press the crust in tin so it takes the shape.
- Remember to pierce a few holes using using a fork in the crust.
- Bake at 170 degree Celcius for 15–20 minutes.
- Wrap the leftover dough in a cling wrap.
Filing:
Now let’s create the inner filling for the dish.
- After the crust is baked, we can add filing of our choice inside it.
- Transfer any filling of your choice blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, etc. to the crust.
- Egg wash the rim of the pastry with brush. (For making egg wash, beat 1 egg lightly and add 1 tsbp water)
Pastry Top:
To top it off let’s bake the pastry top to complete the dish.
- Roll the leftover dough.
- Cut 1/2 inch strip or any size.
- Lay strips spaced apart horizontally then vertically.
- Remove extra overhanging strips.
- Egg wash the top and sprinkle sugar.
- Bake for 10 min at 200 degree Celsius.
